DUMBO Shoot

This past weekend had the warmest temperatures of the new year so far. It seemed like a no-brainer to schedule a photoshoot with Loriann (@loriann_molinaro). The sky was overcast but rain wasn’t expect until well into the night. Since we started around 3PM, we knew daylight would run out soon. The plan was two outfits for the shoot. The first outfit was shot during the day with the second outfit starting after sundown.

DUMBO, Brooklyn is a very popular spot for shoots. It’s extremely picturesque with a great view of the city and both the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges. We tried to be a little different and stuck to the north side of the Manhattan bridge. We started by the river then headed inland to get some shots in the streets.

An overcast day can provide some great lighting. The sky is like a giant softbox. You can still use a fill flash but I stuck with natural light for all the daytime shots. I feel it worked out well and if needed I can do adjustments in post.

The day shots came out great. We decided to do an outfit change and as that was happening the sun quickly went down. We started walking north to get a different area as well as less people walking around the streets.

I saw some Christmas trees by the curb for pickup and tried to incorporate them into the shoot. I am not sure how I feel about the outcome but I’ll let you decide.

Night was rapidly approaching so we trekked on. I first tried to use the street lights as fill. It worked OK in some spots but not in others.

As it got darker out, the street lights weren’t cutting it. I used my Flashpoint Zoom Li-on X R2 as a bounce flash against the buildings and garage doors which worked out very well. I also used a CTO gel to color match the flash to the background.

The shoot worked out well and we were both happy with the results. I was able to get a lot of different photos within the several hours of shooting.
